Activa App Pitch
What is this project?
Activa is an app designed to reduce the loneliness of Older Adults by helping them find events and activities where they can meet people with similar interests. It was done as part of my group Master’s thesis, where the objective was to create a project that used AI to combat loneliness in older adults, and our research led us to this solution, that takes into account the different worries older adults have towards both technology and socialization, respecting the complexity of loneliness as an issue, but still offering a tool for people to confront it.

How was it made?
Here is the process followed to elaborate this Research Report
Preliminary Research: Divergent Visions on the Problem
The first investigation allows us to get a general view of the problem, including as many perspectives on the problem as possible. The methods used were desk research and user interviews
Research Analysis and spacification: Converging on a Single Question to Answer
Analysing the research and doing further interviews, we get a single specific question that we want our solution to answer. This question includes the specific aspects of the problem that we think we can have the strongest impact in.
Select Research Methodology
With our specific solution in mind, we organize creative workshops to generate ideas that align with our chosen view of the problem.
Organize Research Methods
We spend some additional research time while developing the chosen ideas until they reflect their Minimum Viable Product. Then using this new research and the knowledge gathered throughout the process, we select the idea to develop.
Building the Solution
Now, with our selected idea, we enter a phase of planning. Using the information we have about our users, we design our app to reflect their needs and preferences, such as older adults’ distrust of meeting strangers online, the cognitive and visual ability problems that might arise with age, the preference for very simple means of interaction and navigation...
Testing the Solution
We design tests with our prototypes to present them to test users who fit our profile, so that we might ensure that the designs fit their needs.
Perfect the Solution
Find the relevant story the found insights provide and communicate it.
Present the Solution
Once our Solution is properly developed into a concept that can show all of its elements properly, we develop a story to present them that effectively coomunicates what the project is, what’s its purpose, and why it matters.

How was it made?
The development of this App design was a months long affair, performed as it was as an ongoing project alongside our group’s studies. My responsibilities in the group were performing ongoing research to keep improving the project and maintain the needs of our potential users in focus; designing and performing user interviews, and collaborating in the final concept and interaction design for the app.
To ensure a good result, we tailored our method to the User Centric Design process, working on several approaches to the problem before selecting our specific one, and then working on various possible solutions before selecting and developing the one we finally chose to present. This diverging and converging approach helps us ensure that we develop a solution that has been compared and contrasted with different perspectives on the problem and different possible solutions.
Solution Ideation: Divergent Possible Solutions
With our specific solution in mind, we organize creative workshops to generate ideas that align with our chosen view of the problem, using brainstorming techniques such as Crazy Eights, Ideation Matrix... The objective is to, through co-creation arrive at several ideas with good potential to be turned into a deliverable product.
Solution Selection: Converging in one specific answer
We spend some additional research time while developing the chosen ideas until they reflect their Minimum Viable Product. Then using this new research and the knowledge gathered throughout the process, we select the idea to develop.

Testing the Solution
We design tests with our prototypes to present them to test users who fit our profile, so that we might ensure that the designs fit their needs.
Perfect the Solution
Our user tests reveal opportunities for improvement that we can use to improve our design, such as clarifying the writing and labelling to ensure all elements communicate their function directly and uniformly; redesigning icons and non-verbal communication so that it effectively works to ease the communication between system and user; or simplifying elements of the event reservation process to avoid friction.
Present the Solution
Once our Solution is properly developed into a concept that can show all of its elements properly, we develop a story to present them that effectively coomunicates what the project is, what’s its purpose, and why it matters.
